Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is held from April 13th to October 13th, 2025, on Yumeshima, Osaka. Under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” the Expo brings together 150 countries and numerous international organizations, serving as a global event that highlights both technological innovation and sustainable development.
This Expo is not only a global platform for culture communication, but also an “Innovation lab” for materials and technologies – from building structure to pavilion design, from energy solutions to wastes recycling.
Japan Pavilion:
use CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), a new technique that enhance the potential of wood utilization. After the Expo, the CLT will be dismantled, and returned to the lenders.
Germany Pavilion:
place “Circular Economy” at the core and uses reusable materials for building construction. The pavilion is composed of 7 cylinders integrated with green space to showcase zero-waste technologies.
France Pavilion:
composed of reusable prefabricated metal modules. After the Expo, the building materials will be either recycled or reused
Australia Pavilion:
reuse the building materials used in large international events held before
Switzerland Pavilion:
clad with membrane cushions made of PVC-coated PES membrane on the inside and ETFE on the outside. The foil and the entire pavilion are equally recyclable.
Spain Pavilion:
use natural, sustainable and environmentally friendly building materials, such as bamboo, recycled wood, solar panel etc.
Italy Pavilion:
use renewable building materials. After the Expo, the pavilion will become a “mine” of materials.
Luxembourg Pavilion:
feature a steel frame structure with a membrane roof. The design is in accordance with the principles of circular economy.
Serbia Pavilion:
95% materials can be recycled and over 80% can be reused
The Netherlands Pavilion:
focus on hydrogen technology – hydrogen is produced from water to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels
At this Expo, some enterprises also embraced the concept of sustainable development in the design and construction of pavilions
- Mitsui Chemicals: Mitsui Chemicals, in partnership with Prime Polymer and Hide Kasuga 1896, developed the new bio-based floor tiles made of Transwood™ with Prasus™, and supplied 20,000 floor tiles for EXPO National Day Hall
- Panasonic
- “Pavilion born of 3 cycles”
- Iron, glass and copper recycled from used home appliances were used to make main columns & beams, exterior paving blocks and main trunk cables
- Utilization of wood scraps and other waste materials from factory, for example, the artificial marble wastes were used for the washbasin in reception room
- Upcycled wood board PALM LOOP® made from oil palm waste; “Sustainable floor” made from recycled construction waste and unused forest materials
- Energy for the nighttime light show is generated by hydrogen power which is produced by using zero-carbon electricity
