1 Preface

Daydream participates in different fairs and shows e.g. K2019 in Duesseldorf-Germany, European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nurnberg-Germany, Highly-Functional Material Week in Tokyo-Japan, ChinaPlas in Shanghai-China, Suppliers’ Day in New York–USA to present our tailor-made consulting services.
For CHINACOAT-Nov. 2019, Shanghai, we wanted to share with you:

  • Our synthesis for trends in the coatings market for the coming years
  • Innovation and new technology presented by 19 major chemical companies (which all belong to our list “Top 100 Chemical Companies”).

2 Introduction

CHINACOAT 2019 [1], held on Nov. 18-20, 2019, Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), is a Chinese International Exhibition for Coatings (established in 1996), Printing Inks and Adhesives that has been devoted to providing an international trading platform for suppliers and manufacturers of the coatings industry to connect with global trade visitors, particularly from China and Asia. The show is held annually and alternates its venue between the cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai, P. R. China.

The scale, number of exhibitors, and audience of CHINACOAT during 2014-2019 is shown in Figure 1. For the 2019 Shanghai edition, there was a total of 1260 exhibitors from 32 countries/regions with a gross exhibition area of over 97,000 square meters, exhibiting Powder Coatings Technology, UV/EB Technology & Products, International Machinery, Instrument & Services, China Machinery, Instrument & Services and China & International Raw Materials.

3 Focus topic at CHINACOAT 2019

3.1 “Eco-friendly” – Waterborne, UV-Curing, Solvent-free

Driven by the increasing awareness of environmental protection and health concerns, a lot of attention has been put on eco-friendly coatings and coating-aid products. Therefore, products with keywords as “waterborne (WB)” and “low VOC/Zero VOC” were found almost on every exhibitor’s booth.
With the characteristic of low VOC, WB coatings continue to be the first choice of environmental-friendly solutions due to Chinese government’s environmental protection policies [2] and the current development of WB technologies. Likewise, UV-curing systems and solvent-free coatings are becoming major trends for coating solutions as well.

3.2 High-Performance and Multi-Functionality

In addition to eco-friendly, high-performance and multi-functionality products were also the focus of CHINACOAT exhibitors. Various additives and coatings with high-performance and multi-function were also shown, such as, anti-corrosion and anti-biotic, high gloss, self-healing, strong weather resistance, chemical acid and alkali resistance.
Under the topic of “High performance coatings – defining next generation coating solutions”, the CHINACOAT conference and workshop also emphasized on “high performances and multi-functionality”. Consequently, instead of always depending on importing high-performance coatings from the Western hemisphere, Japan and Korea, many attempts have been made by coating industries as well as government to prepare high-performance coatings in China and develop home-grown technologies due to the cost consideration.

3.3 Digital

In terms of sales, digital is the only keyword that can be epitomized from CHINACOAT 2019. A large number of companies were introducing their E-commerce platforms at respective booths.
For example, SICMOUSE, a technology-oriented enterprise focusing on silicon and silicon-carbon chemicals showed its own e-commerce platforms where users can not only buy the silicone related products from their cooperated company, but also have professional technical support. SICMOUSE also launched their online experiment platform where users can communicate their demand for the products with the technical team which will conduct the experiment and develop the tailor-made formula for the users.
Other chemical companies like Covestro also launched their own online sales platform, where the audience was invited to test it on-site.
Launching online shopping platforms like “1688” is also becoming the trend of chemical companies. Large chemical companies such as Evonik and Allnex have already launched their own online shop on 1688, expanding their distribution channels and promoting the effective coverage to the decentralized markets in different regions.
